Shoeboxed Review 2013 – Best way to manage your receipts?

Shoeboxed Review is your headquarters for eliminating paper clutter, as the platform serves as a virtual shoebox where you can store and organize your receipts and documents with ease.  In addition to “effortless expense reporting,” also touts robust accounting and bookkeeping features, and even tax preparation tools.

I have used them for the last 6 months and in this shoeboxed review I want to go through some of the basics. Make no mistake, they are awesome!

It’s a much more comprehensive alternative to those basic document scanners, which can be rather time consuming (and for scanners that convert the image into an editable file, verifying the accuracy of the digital version of the document can be very time-consuming as well!) is a great timesaver, with affordable pricing and an array of features that are apt to delight your company’s accounting team!

Shoeboxed review on features

Shoeboxed features

In addition to converting your receipts, invoices and other paper documents into digital form, also features a free new desktop uploader. This makes it even easier to upload documents to the Shoeboxed interface from a Mac or PC.

There’s also an app available in the App Store and the Android Market for complete compatibility with all your devices. This is a real benefit for on-the-go businesspeople.

In addition to saving time by way of data entry, also simplifies tax time since the documents are all provided in an IRS-friendly format. In addition, the accuracy of each digital document is confirmed by an actual human.

The digital storage interface features 256-bit security, thereby providing you with peace of mind.

The interface is fairly intuitive and easy-to-use, making the platform quite user-friendly too.

To sign up for a 30-day free premium account trial, you’ll need to provide your name, mailing address and phone number. Then, you can select a 30-day free trial for any one of their four service plans (detailed in the next section.) This is actually a tremendous benefit, as you’ll enjoy a full-featured account for 30 days for any one of the four plans – quite rare, as most similar sites offer just the bare minimum in their free trial. This flexibility enables you to get a real feel for whether a particular service plan offering will meet your needs. also offers so-called “mail in” plans, which include access to their premium mail-in service. The mail-in service provides business owners with a “hassle free way to turn paper documents into verified and archived data in your Evernote account.” The Shoeboxed mail-in plan allows for up to 500 documents per month and it includes a supply of pre-paid envelopes, expedited processing and full data extraction.

The digital documents provided via the mail-in service are compatible with Evernote and an array of other popular bookkeeping/accounting programs, and marketing tools, including Excel, Quickbooks, Xero, Google Contacts, Salesforce and an array of other programs.

Pricing and Plans offers four different plans, which are fairly competitive in terms of the features and pricing relative to comparable offerings on the web.

The Lite plan is priced at $9.95 per month or $99 per year and it includes up to 50 documents per month and a 3 to 5 day turnaround time.

The Classic plan is priced at $29.95 per month or $299 per year and it includes processing of up to 150 documents per month, prepaid envelopes, return of your original documents, Quickbooks integration and a 2-3 day turnaround.

The Business plan is priced at $49.95 per month or $499 per year and it allows for processing of up to 500 documents per month. This plan includes all the features of the Classic plan, plus a 1-2 business day turnaround and premium customer support services.

The Executive plan is priced at $99.95 per month or $999 per year and it allows for processing of up to 1,000 documents per month. This plan includes all the features of the Business plan, plus a 0-1 business day turnaround and unlimited tax advice from 1-800 ACCOUNTANTS.

Of course, allows you to cancel your account at any time; there are no long-term commitments required. The monthly pricing option makes it easy to trial a plan for a bit longer than the 30-day free trial period.

At the time of writing this shoeboxed review, I am currently using the Lite Plan but I will soon be moving to the classic plan as my business takes off. Up until this point I have only been using it to sort out my personal receipts.

The Verdict

If you’re just seeking basic document scanning for a handful of documents each month, purchasing a digital document scanner may be a suitable solution. But if you’re seeking more comprehensive services for a high volume of documents, one of’s plans offer a great option. The wide variety of service plans offered by is a definite advantage, as you can choose a plan that fits your needs without spending lots of money on features that you don’t really need.
